Why a dismissal shifts the lender's view
A bank approving a personal loan wants regular income it can verify. Once a permanent contract ends, the pay slips that supported your last application stop being current, and what remains is either unemployment benefit not yet in payment or nothing at all.
That does not mean refusal is automatic. Length of service in your last job, a clean account history, a partner's earnings or a guarantor can still carry weight. But a standard consumer loan for someone newly dismissed is usually hard to obtain, which is why the alternatives below matter.
Know when your benefit actually starts
In France, unemployment benefit is called the ARE (aide au retour à l'emploi), paid by France Travail. For people under 55, eligibility generally requires at least six months of work, or 130 days or 910 hours, within the previous 24 months, and registration within 12 months of the contract ending, according to the government's service-public portal.
A seven-day waiting period applies first, and extra termination pay above the legal minimum can add a longer deferral, capped at 150 days (75 days for economic dismissal). Maximum payment length depends on age and on economic conditions, so check your own notification rather than relying on a general figure.
- Register as a jobseeker quickly: rights open only once you are registered, and there is a 12-month window.
- Keep every France Travail letter: a lender may ask for the benefit notification as proof of income.
- Use the official simulator to estimate your first payment date before agreeing repayment dates.
Microcredit through a bank partner
Caisse d'Epargne's Parcours Confiance scheme, run with the Institut de Microcrédit, offers personal microcredits for people who cannot borrow on standard terms, including jobseekers. The Normandy regional page mentions amounts from €300 to €8,000 and terms from 3 to 72 months, for things like a driving licence, a vehicle, training, a computer or housing costs.
You generally start through a partner organisation, such as a municipal social action office, a mission locale or an association, which helps build the project and follows it afterwards. Approval is never guaranteed and depends on the bank's review of your repayment capacity.
Adie for work-related mobility
Adie, a non-profit lender, runs a mobility microcredit of up to €8,000 over up to 60 months to help people reach a job or training, for example by repairing a car, paying for a licence or moving. People without permanent contracts, jobseekers included, can apply, and a guarantor can cover part of the loan.
Adie publishes its fixed rate and a solidarity contribution on the loan page, plus a worked example. Read both, since the headline rate alone understates the total cost.
A worked scenario, clearly hypothetical
Take a warehouse supervisor dismissed for personal reasons who has found a training course three towns away but cannot use the train at the required hours. She needs a used car and a licence renewal. A bank declines the usual personal loan, so she meets an advisor at a partner association, who helps prepare a budget and a project file.
The mobility microcredit she then applies for is sized so that monthly repayments fit inside her expected benefit. If her unemployment benefit starts late, she asks for a payment schedule adjusted accordingly before signing, not after the first missed instalment.
Options that avoid new debt
Before borrowing, ask whether the pressure can be moved rather than financed. Landlords, energy suppliers and insurers often agree to a payment plan when they receive a copy of your dismissal letter and your France Travail registration.
Local social action offices (CCAS) can also grant one-off discretionary help for urgent bills. These sums are modest and differ from town to town, yet they cost nothing to repay, which makes them worth a phone call before any loan application.
Questions to ask before you sign
Whatever the lender, ask for the annual percentage rate (TAEG in French), the total repayable amount, the cost of any insurance and whether early repayment is free. Credit sold at a distance usually comes with a 14-day withdrawal period, and an honest lender will explain it.
Treat any promise that all unemployed applicants are accepted as a warning sign, as is any request to pay a fee before the money arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a normal bank loan right after being dismissed?
It is possible only if you still have solid income from a partner, strong savings or a guarantor. For most people, ordinary consumer credit is difficult, so social microcredit or a request to adjust existing payments is more realistic.
Does severance pay delay unemployment benefit?
Termination pay above the legal minimum can create a deferral before the first ARE payment, capped at 150 days, or 75 days for economic dismissal. The legal minimum itself does not trigger it. France Travail's simulator gives your own date.
Do I need to be a customer of the bank for a microcredit?
Not always. Parcours Confiance applications are normally routed via a social partner and the local bank, while Adie lends directly through its agencies. Check the page of the organisation you choose, as conditions differ.
What should I do if I fall behind on repayments?
Contact the lender before the missed date, because early contact opens the door to rescheduling. Free budget advice from a local social centre or the Banque de France can also help if several debts are piling up.
